majorCaption  = new Array( 'While the pup is nursing, the connection between pup and mom is strong. In just a few weeks, the pup is old enough to take care of itself and the bond between them goes away.', 'When the pup is around 14 days old, the mom starts going back in the water and the pup is left on the ice on it\'s own.', 'One of the colonies is in the cracks at the North side of the Erebus Glacier tongue, a location we call \"North Base\". Getting in there is not quite as easy as getting to the other colonies. Climbing gear is needed to gain access. Mark Johnston is checking the gear before we go in.', 'Me, as I am preparing to put in an ice anchor for the rope.', 'Mark starts down the first of a series of ice falls leading us back to the glacier.', 'Using the climbing rope, we rappel down the ice walls and climb back out on the return.', 'The seals at North Base are found in several smaller pockets along a main crack. They are difficult to find in here and a helicopter flight is made to locate them before we go in.', 'Sitting on the icy slopes of Mount Erebus.', 'Pup at Big Razorback Island.', 'Adelie penguin running across the frozen McMurdo sound. We sometimes see them in the middle nowhere, running full speed to get somewhere, even though the closest access to the water might be miles away.', 'The weather has been unusually nice since the beginning of October, but even when we say it is nice and warm, there is still some evidence that it is a cold part of the world.', 'A couple of pups hanging out together while the moms are in the water.', 'The team breaks for lunch on the ice during an exploratory ride up along the coast of Wohlschlag Bay at the base of Mount Bird.', 'Mark in front of some of the overhanging ice on the cliifs along the coast of Wohlschlag Bay.', 'Looking South along the Ross Island coast at Hut point.', 'The New Zealand reserch station, Scott Base, on the opposite side of Hut Point Peninsula from McMurdo Station. The dramatic prasure ridges in front of the base develop because the permanent ice of the Ross Ice Shelf meets the sea ice here. ', 'A group of researchers on their way to tag a seal behind Big Razorback Island. Mt. Erebus and the glaciers on the side of the mountain is seen in the background.', 'Kerry Gunther, Bear Management specialist from Yellowstone National Park, getting in position to \"bag\" a female Weddell seal.', 'Kerry makes it look easy, but getting the bag over the seals head can be a real challenge. Some of the animals quickly figure out which moves they need to make to avoid the bag or how to wiggle out of it later on.', 'The seal quickly calms down as it\'s vission is blocked by the bag. The ropes are placed under the front flippers to make it more difficult for the seal to back out again. However, sometimes the seal will role and wiggle which makes it hard work to keep it under control.', 'Annie Ferris places 2 sets of tags in the flippers. These numbered tags serve as identification of the animal for the ongoing study of the population. The tag numbers are recorded in database which now holds more than 17,000 animals born in these colonies.' );
