Places that were ok to walk or travel last week might now be open water and we constantly have to watch out for hidden cracks and holes.', 'Pup still with the \"Puppy Fur\" known as Lanugo, or as we call it, the \"Puppy Pyjamas\". This extra fur helps keep the pup warm until it develops a sufficiently thick layer of blubber.', 'Most areas are covered with a layer of snow, but some areas are blue ice.', 'Every now and then a snow storm blows in from the North. This year we have had several snow days and as long as the wind is not too high, we can still work on those days.', 'After a night with snowfall and serious winds the seals are all covered. The pups curl up behind mom and ride out the storm.', 'Because the fur and blubber keeps the body heat in, the snow does not melt on the animals.', 'Mark Johnston at the Fish Hut in McMurdo sound. The hut is sitting where the ice breaker will come through later but the hut will be back on land before the ship gets here. We deploy the Sonar system from the hut.', 'The Barne glacier just North of Cape Evens where Robert F. Scott\'s hut still stands.', 'The Barne glacier is very impressive from a distance, but the size of it doesnt really sink in until you have a reference, such as people or animals, in front of it.', '\"Sometimes the seal wins\" .... Mark working on getting the head bag off again after a seal has been bagged and tagged.', 'Spilling fuel is simply not an option in Antarctica so extreme care is required when we refuel in the field. With the strong sunlight, it can be difficult to judge when the tank is full.', 'And then one day, for no particular reason, a small flock of Emperor Penguins walked up to camp.', 'Perhaps they stopped by for fuel?', 'Penguins are very curious birds and the absolutely best way to see them up close is to simply sit down and wait, they will most likely come over to check you out. Here Kelly is waiting for a close encounter while sitting on the food boxed outside the kitchen hut.', 'The colors of the Emperor Penguins are very strong and pretty. When you get close enough you also notice a lot of details in the black feathers.', 'Emperor Penguin', 'When the birds are resting they spend a lot of time pruning their feathers.', '\"Happy feet\" ... When they rest, the Emperor Penguins lift their feet a little and sit on the heels and their tail.', 'There is a lot of ice to travel on from here to anything. The ice edge is about 25 miles away.', 'Emperors on the sea ice with the \"Royal Society Range\" mountains in the background.', 'Emperor Penguin', '\"How close do you get\", some people ask ..... well ... pretty close! For a while the birds were so close that I could not focus my camera on them but had to just sit and watch them.', 'Me, shooting from down low to get a good perspective. ', 'Beautiful day with a special visit for us at Big Razorback Island.' );
